Lync server roles

Major Lync server roles:

• Archiving
• Director
• Edge
• Front End
  • usually the following two subroles are colocated:
    • A/V conferencing role
    • Mediation Server role
• Monitoring

Lync server roles that work in pools:

• A/V conferencing
• Director
• Edge
• Front End
• Mediation

As you can see, the most important Lync server roles are installed in pools (if the environment is large enough and Enterprise Edition of Lync is installed). There are two roles that aren't installed in pools: The archiving and monitoring role.
